MAJESTIC UNVEILING

During my visit to the UK late last year, I had the pleasure of immersing myself in the captivating experiences that this remarkable island has to offer. Allow me to take you on a journey through the highlights of my adventure, where culture, art, and literary wonders awaited at every turn.

London is a city that has captured the hearts of people from around the world. With its rich history, vibrant culture, and diverse communities, there's something for everyone in this bustling metropolis. It’s never a dull moment, there’s so much to see, it can be a bit overwhelming. But I knew I was staying for a couple months so I paced myself and decided to hit the biggest tourist spots at a leisurely pace. I started with The Tower of London, known for its rich and often bloody history it was built in the 11th century, and has served various purposes over the centuries, including a royal palace (full of zoo animals), a prison, a place of execution and home to the Crown Jewels of England.

From the Tower of London I made my way over the iconic landmark and engineering marvel, the Tower Bridge. I was able to take in the stunning views of the River Thames and the city skyline. If you're lucky, you might even see the bridge opening up to let a large ship pass through.

Another must-visit destination was the British Museum. The museum is home to a vast collection of artifacts and artworks, including the famous Rosetta Stone and the Elgin Marbles, a collection of Ancient Greek sculptures from the Parthenon and other structures from the Acropolis of Athens.  It was wonderful to see so many beautiful artifacts from around the world, but I personally would rather see those items be returned to their homeland.

Next stop was the London Natural History Museum, a treasure trove of natural wonders, housing over 80 million specimens ranging from fossils to live specimens. Visitors can explore the diversity of life on Earth and learn about the history of our planet through engaging exhibits and interactive displays. A must-visit destination for nature lovers and curious minds alike.Right next door is the Victoria and Albert Museum, a world-renowned institution that showcases a collection of over 2.3 million objects spanning 5,000 years of human creativity. Visitors can immerse themselves in a rich cultural experience from ancient artifacts to contemporary design. The V&A is a must-visit destination for anyone interested in art and design.

Art aficionados simply cannot miss a visit to the London National Art Gallery or the Tate Modern.  Both filled with masterpieces from the likes of Van Gogh and Da Vinci or works from Picasso, Warhol, and Kandinsky that push creative boundaries.

Visiting the Queen's Guard was a quintessential London experience. Watching the stoic soldiers dressed in their iconic uniforms atop majestic horses, it was a sight to behold. Visitors can witness the changing of the guard ceremony outside Buckingham Palace or at the Horse Guards Parade, both of which are steeped in tradition and history.

One of the most memorable events that made a huge impact on me while I was there was seeing Queen Elizabeth’s funeral procession. It was an emotional affair for the entire nation, if not the world. Troops and military horses rehearsed almost non-stop for days to ensure nothing went wrong. Hundreds of thousands of people lined the streets as the coffin was taken to Windsor Castle where she was laid to rest. 

ENDLESS SPIRES

 
I had the chance to visit Oxford, the captivating "city of dreaming spires." Its iconic Radcliffe Camera and Ashmolean Museum showcased centuries of art and history. The University of Oxford, with its stunning architecture, offered a glimpse into student life. Exploring Christ Church College, a filming location for Hogwarts, felt like stepping into a magical realm. The serene gardens and majestic cathedral added to the city's timeless allure.

Aside from its film connections, Christ Church College is a magnificent example of English Gothic architecture. The college's cathedral is one of the largest and most beautiful in the country, with stunning stained-glass windows and intricate stonework. It's a peaceful and serene space that feels worlds away from the bustling city outside.

I also had a chance to visit Portsmouth, a vibrant and historic city with impressive architecture and art. The area has played a key role in British history for centuries and has a rich maritime heritage. The Spinnaker Tower, an iconic landmark, showcased the city's grandeur with breathtaking views. Modern and historic blend harmoniously amidst Portsmouth's museums and art galleries, like the Portsmouth City Museum and Art Gallery, unveiling the city's rich narrative. The Mary Rose Museum fascinated me with the remains of Henry VIII's flagship.

My favourite sight was visiting the ARTches, they were once artillery barracks that have been converted into 13 working studios revealing a thriving artistic community nestled along the picturesque waterfront. As I explored the studios, I was immersed in a world of creativity and inspiration.

TAPESTRY OF HISTORY

Edinburgh is a city that captured my heart from the moment I arrived. It's probably my Scottish roots but I instantly fell in love, yes even listening to bagpipes. The stunning architecture, rich history, and vibrant culture make it a must-visit destination due to its reputation as a center of learning. The city was home to many notable historical figures, including writers Sir Walter Scott and Robert Louis Stevenson to name a few.

One of the highlights of my trip was visiting Edinburgh Castle. It sits atop a hill overlooking the city, and the views are breathtaking. The Royal Mile is a street that stretches from Edinburgh Castle to the Palace of Holyroodhouse. The street is lined with shops, restaurants, and historic landmarks; walking from one end to the other is like taking a trip back in time, with stunning architecture and fascinating history at every turn. Edinburgh's Old Town, which dates back to the medieval period, is a maze of narrow alleyways and hidden courtyards, with buildings and landmarks that tell the story of the city's past.

The National Museum of Scotland is another highlight of the city. It's home to an impressive collection of artifacts, including the fascinating bog bodies, which are ancient human remains preserved in peat bogs. The museum is free to visit and is a great way to learn about Scottish history and culture.

The Scottish National Gallery, located on The Mound, houses a collection of paintings and sculptures from around the world, including works by famous artists such as Botticelli, Van Gogh, and Monet and was a wonderful way to spend an afternoon. The Scottish National Gallery of Modern Art is a must-visit for art lovers, with a collection of contemporary and modern art that includes works by Andy Warhol, Roy Lichtenstein, and Damien Hirst.
